I’ll Free Nnamdi Kanu as President, no Reason Imprisoning Him Over Insults – Peter Obi

The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, if he becomes Nigeria’s president.

Speaking to Nigerians in Washington, the former Anambra State governor argued that Kanu’s continued imprisonment was unjust, stressing that the government had no valid reason to detain him over remarks made on Radio Biafra.

“There’s no reason for keeping Nnamdi Kanu. He has done nothing wrong. The government has no reason to arrest him because he was speaking and calling people names on radio—it doesn’t make sense,” Obi said.

Obi emphasized that insults or name-calling should not be considered criminal, noting that politicians are often subjected to such treatment.

He added that, if elected, he would prioritize dialogue with all agitators to understand their grievances and seek peaceful resolutions.

The IPOB leader is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Correctional Centre. Obi’s comments come amid growing debates on how Nigeria should handle separatist movements and political dissent.
