Governor Hyacinth Alia’s Special Assistant on Youths and Media Mobilization, Atu Terver Joseph, has stepped down from his role, just hours after holding a private meeting with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.
In a resignation letter addressed to the Benue State Government, Atu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve under Alia’s administration, noting the experience gained during his tenure.
“I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity to serve under your administration and the confidence reposed in me. I wish your Excellency continued success in the service of Benue State,” he wrote.
Although Atu did not disclose the reason for his resignation, political observers link the move to his growing alliance with Akume ahead of the 2027 general elections.
On Friday, Atu shared details of his visit to Akume on Facebook, describing the SGF as “the most powerful Benue man alive” and praising his leadership qualities.
His post read: “Today, I decided to pay a surprise June 12 visit to our dear father, the SGF Senator Dr George Akume. He is the most powerful Benue man alive with a good heart… Today, I understand why God has been elevating him to where he is.”
The development comes amid reports of a cold war between Governor Alia and Akume, his estranged political godfather, raising speculation about shifting loyalties within Benue’s political landscape.
