President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed that Nigeria will not return to its petrol subsidy regime, describing it as an “addictive” policy that undermined the country’s economic stability.
Speaking during his Independence Day address on Thursday to mark Nigeria’s 66th anniversary, Tinubu defended the reforms introduced since he assumed office in 2023, acknowledging that while they have been difficult, they are necessary to confront long-standing weaknesses in the economy.
“Our reforms did not create the weaknesses in our economy. They confronted them,” the President said.Tinubu warned against calls from “influential but regressive voices” urging a reversal of the reforms, likening such demands to abandoning treatment for a serious illness.
Using a cancer-treatment analogy, he compared Nigeria’s past reliance on subsidies to a patient choosing morphine to dull pain instead of undergoing painful but curative therapy.
“For too long, Nigeria’s leaders chose morphine while praying for a miracle that never came,” he noted.
The President insisted that the reforms, though painful, are designed to secure long-term recovery and prosperity, urging Nigerians to stay the course rather than return to policies that failed to address the nation’s underlying economic problems.
