The United States government has revoked more than 250,000 visas since President Donald Trump assumed office, marking one of the most sweeping immigration crackdowns in recent history.
According to the State Department, the revocations covered a wide range of violations, including visa holders who breached entry conditions, committed crimes, engaged in fraud, called for violence against Americans, or posed national security risks.
Spokesperson Tommy Pigott described the move as a “historic milestone,” stressing that “every visa decision is a national security decision.”
He added: “A U.S. visa is a privilege, not a right. If you violate the terms of that privilege, you will lose it.”
Among those affected were 2,300 visas linked to birth tourism, as well as 27 visas belonging to Latin American officials and their families accused of corruption.
Over the summer, the administration also began targeting business and tourist visas held by foreigners who later applied for asylum, with Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau warning against “bogus asylum claims.”
In August alone, more than 175,000 visas were revoked, largely due to criminal activity ranging from assault and theft to drug-related offenses, reckless driving, sexual assault, child abuse, and embezzlement.
The administration insists the measures are part of a broader effort to strengthen vetting, protect communities, and ensure that the immigration system is not abused.
