The United States has filed fresh torture charges against ousted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, intensifying the criminal case against the pair currently held in US custody.
Maduro and Flores, who were captured in January during a US military raid on their Caracas compound, already face drug trafficking and firearms charges.
The new indictment, made public on Thursday, accuses them of conspiracy to commit torture, alleging they inflicted “severe physical and mental pain and suffering” to suppress political opposition and silence dissent.
Prosecutors claim victims, including US citizens, were subjected to electric shocks, waterboarding, and beatings while detained in Venezuela.
The charges suggest the acts were part of a broader effort to preserve power, intimidate opponents, and neutralize dissent. Both Maduro and Flores are scheduled to stand trial in New York next June and remain in custody at a Brooklyn jail.
This development adds another layer to the ongoing case and shows Washington’s determination to hold the former Venezuelan leadership accountable for alleged human rights abuses.
