The Presidency has strongly criticized Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi over his continued insistence that he won the 2023 presidential election, describing the claim as “unfathomable delusion.”
Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Bola Tinubu, made the remark in a post on X on Thursday.
He argued that Obi, who officially came third in the election according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has persisted in maintaining a baseless claim nearly four years after the poll.
Ajayi noted that Obi recently admitted there was no evidence to support his assertion of victory, yet still insisted he won.
“The unfathomable delusion that makes a man who came 3rd in an election to keep insisting he won almost 4 years after certainly can’t be explained,” Ajayi wrote.
Obi has repeatedly alleged that the election was rigged, reiterating his position in a BBC Africa interview. His comments have reignited political debate, with critics questioning his persistence and supporters defending his stance on electoral integrity.
The Presidency’s sharp response highlights ongoing tensions between the ruling party and opposition figures as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 elections.
