The government of Türkiye has expressed deep sadness over the crash of a Nigerian military aircraft in Ondo State and extended its condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye, the Turkish government said: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives resulting from the crash of a military aircraft today (5 October) in Ondo state of Nigeria.
“We extend our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident, and to the people of Nigeria.”
The Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft, with registration number NAF 931, crashed near a naval base in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, while on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos.
The Nigerian Air Force later confirmed that all 25 people on board, five crew members and 20 passengers lost their lives.
President Bola Tinubu has declared three days of national mourning and directed that flags be flown at half-mast across the country in honour of the deceased. He has also ordered a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash.
