Presidential Candidates Must be Grilled on Experience, Capacity, Record – Donald Duke

Former Cross River State governor and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) presidential candidate Donald Duke has said all presidential aspirants for the 2027 election must be thoroughly scrutinised on their experience, capacity and public record.

Duke, who governed Cross River between 1999 and 2007, argued that Nigerians should move beyond rhetoric and personality politics and instead examine what each candidate has actually done in previous public roles.

He stressed that the next president must demonstrate proven competence in governance, institution-building and delivery of results, rather than relying solely on political popularity or party structure.

The PRP candidate said his own record as governor, including the development of tourism infrastructure such as the Tinapa Resort and Obudu Mountain Resort, as well as efforts to strengthen state institutions, reflected a commitment to leaving public office better than he met it.

Duke has repeatedly called for opposition parties to unite behind the strongest candidate capable of offering credible leadership, while warning that a fragmented opposition could hand victory to the incumbent.

He maintained that the 2027 contest should be decided on the basis of who possesses the experience, capacity and track record needed to address Nigeria’s economic, security and governance challenges.
