The Makinde-Daura Presidential Campaign Organisation has demanded a comprehensive investigation into the Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash in Ondo State and raised concerns over the welfare and equipping of the military under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In a statement on Tuesday by its Director of Strategic Communications, Richard Ihediwa, the campaign organisation described the crash of the ATR-42 aircraft near the Igbokoda Naval Base as another tragedy that highlighted challenges facing the nation’s armed forces.
The aircraft, NAF 931, crashed on Monday while on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos.
The Nigerian Air Force later confirmed that all 25 people on board five crew members and 20 passengers lost their lives.
The organisation said the incident was part of a pattern of military aircraft crashes under the current administration and raised serious questions about the equipping and welfare of personnel, despite the resources available to the Federal Government.
It recalled a previous Nigerian Air Force helicopter crash in Shiroro, Niger State, in August 2023 during a casualty evacuation mission involving wounded troops.
“It again raises serious questions about the equipping and welfare of our military and other security agencies. Given the resources available, our military ought to be among the best equipped and remunerated across the world,” the statement said.
The campaign organisation, which is promoting Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde as the Allied Peoples Movement presidential candidate with Lawal Daura as his running mate, pledged that a Makinde-Daura administration would prioritise the equipping, training and welfare of the military and other security agencies.
It extended condolences to the families of the victims and the Nigerian military, and called for a wide-ranging investigation to establish the cause of the crash and prevent a recurrence.
