Tinubu Celebrates Kwankwaso at 70, Affirms Longstanding Ties

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former Kano State Governor and presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, on his 70th birthday, emphasizing that political differences will not diminish his affection for the veteran politician.

In a statement issued by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, on Wednesday, Tinubu described Kwankwaso as a longstanding associate, recalling their political relationship dating back to the National Assembly in 1992.

At the time, Kwankwaso served in the House of Representatives while Tinubu was a senator.

Tinubu noted that their bond continued in 1999 when both emerged as governors, playing pivotal roles as members of the “Class of ’99 Governors” in laying the foundation for Nigeria’s democratic journey.

He further highlighted their collaboration in 2013 during the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), remarking that “history and service have kept us intertwined.”

Acknowledging Kwankwaso’s contributions to Kano State and Nigeria, Tinubu praised his record as a two-term governor, former Minister of Defence, senator, and presidential candidate, describing him as an influential figure in national politics.

While recognizing that both men now belong to different political parties and are competing on separate platforms ahead of the January 2027 election, Tinubu stressed that this would not affect his personal regard for Kwankwaso. He wished him good health, fulfilment, and many more years of active participation in Nigeria’s democratic process.

Kwankwaso, a prominent political leader from Kano State, marked his 70th birthday on October 21, 2026.
