JAMB to Introduce Life Skills, Critical Thinking into UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced plans to incorporate life skills and critical thinking into the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) as part of reforms aimed at improving how candidates are assessed for admission into tertiary institutions.

Speaking on NTA’s Good Morning Nigeria programme, JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, explained that the initiative would ensure candidates are evaluated beyond academic knowledge, making the exam more relevant to the demands of higher education.

Aina clarified that UTME scores are not absolute measures of intelligence but rather a ranking system among peers. He noted that the minimum entry score varies depending on overall performance in each examination cycle.

On the reforms, he revealed that a committee of education stakeholders and experts has been set up to recommend how life skills and critical thinking can be integrated, either as separate components or within existing UTME subjects.

Beyond examination changes, JAMB has also introduced new measures to ease challenges faced by candidates in updating personal information.

These include procedures for changing registered phone numbers and email addresses, as well as a National Identification Number (NIN) alignment process to correct discrepancies in names and dates of birth.

According to Aina, the reforms will help thousands of candidates whose admission plans were previously hindered by errors in their records.

He encouraged candidates to visit JAMB’s official website and social media platforms for detailed guidance on the new processes.
