Reps Seek Federal Relief for Edo Tanker Explosion Victims

The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to provide immediate relief materials, financial assistance, and rehabilitation support to victims of the recent petrol tanker explosion at Oluku in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The tragic incident, which occurred on October 15, 2026, claimed lives, left several people injured, and destroyed shops, vehicles, and goods, depriving traders of their livelihoods.

The explosion followed a tanker accident near Oluku Market, where spilled petrol ignited after residents attempted to scoop fuel.

During Wednesday’s plenary, a motion of urgent public importance was moved by Omosede Igbinedion, who represents an Edo constituency.

She highlighted the devastating impact of the inferno, noting that many victims lost lifetime savings and now face severe economic hardship.

The House commended Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for visiting the scene and pledging to rebuild the market, but stressed that federal intervention was necessary to complement state efforts.

Lawmakers called on the National Emergency Management Agency to assess the disaster and provide relief, while urging collaboration between the Federal and Edo State governments to restore livelihoods.

Additionally, the House directed the Federal Ministry of Works and the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency to rehabilitate dangerous sections of the Benin-Lagos Expressway around Oluku.

Relevant agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, were tasked with investigating the circumstances of the accident and recommending measures to prevent future tragedies.

The incident has reignited concerns about road safety and the risks of fuel transportation through densely populated areas, underscoring the need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations and public awareness about the dangers of scooping spilled petroleum products.
