‘Nothing to Show After 24 Years in Power’, Wike Knocks Amaechi

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has criticised former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, saying he has nothing tangible to show for 24 years spent as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, governor, and minister.

Wike made the remarks during an interactive session with leaders and stakeholders of Evo Kingdom in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

According to a statement issued on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the minister challenged residents to identify any development projects or political empowerment Amaechi brought to the kingdom or the state during that period.

“Someone was speaker of the House of Assembly for eight years, governor for eight years, and minister for eight years – that is 24 years in top leadership positions! What can anybody point to that he attracted to Evo Kingdom or Rivers State in all those 24 years? Nothing! Not one single thing!” Wike said.

He contrasted this with his own record as Minister of State for Education, noting that he could list projects he facilitated for Rivers State.

“But somebody was speaker, governor, and headed a very lucrative ministry as a full minister for eight years, yet brought nothing back home! How can someone who spent 24 years in power without empowering his people or raising new leaders now turn around to tell you he loves you?” he asked.

Wike also restated his pledge to resign as minister if President Bola Tinubu loses in Rivers State and the FCT.

Speaking at a strategic consultative meeting with stakeholders of Akpor Kingdom on Friday, where he mobilised support for the president, he said his focus in Rivers was to help the people rather than personal gain.

He stressed that politics centres on the collective interest of the people rather than lasting enmity, describing leadership as a role that requires absorbing both praise and criticism.

Wike urged an all-inclusive campaign structure in Obio-Akpor, calling on politicians, traditional rulers, pastors, and others to unite for the elections.
