The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council (APC-PCC) has dismissed claims of a plot to assassinate former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, and insisted that his security details remain intact.
In a statement on Tuesday, APC-PCC spokesman Dele Alake rejected allegations by ADC member Timi Frank that the Nigerian government was planning to kill Atiku.
Alake called the claim a “grave allegation” that Frank must substantiate and urged security agencies to invite him for questioning to help protect lives.
“We categorically reject the claim that the presidency of Nigeria or the APC Campaign Council is involved in any plot to assassinate former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or any opposition figure,” the statement said.
The council also denied reports that Atiku’s security personnel had been withdrawn. It stated that the former vice president continues to enjoy protection from the police and the Department of State Services (DSS).
According to the APC-PCC, President Bola Tinubu recently directed security agencies to strengthen protection for all presidential, vice-presidential, governorship and deputy governorship candidates nationwide ahead of the 2027 elections.
“The security around the ADC Presidential candidate has never been compromised. As a former Vice President of Nigeria, he enjoys two levels of state-funded security protection. President Tinubu has increased security protection for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as a Presidential candidate,” the statement added.
While dismissing the allegation as typical opposition “rabble-rousing” aimed at heating up the polity, the council said any credible threat to life would be taken seriously regardless of political affiliation.
It encouraged Frank to share any relevant information for prompt investigation. The APC-PCC further noted that President Tinubu, who spent years in opposition, understands the importance of competitive politics in Nigeria’s democracy.
It called on all candidates, parties and supporters to focus on issues that matter to Nigerians and avoid baseless allegations that could create unnecessary tension.
