The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a mix of dust haze and thunderstorms across various parts of the country from Friday through Sunday, advising residents to take necessary safety precautions.
According to the agency’s latest weather outlook released in Abuja, slight dust haze is expected across most northern states on Friday, with moderate haze affecting parts of Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi and Kaduna states. Isolated thunderstorms with light rainfall are also predicted in parts of Taraba State later in the day.
For the North-Central region, NiMet forecast mainly sunny conditions with patches of cloud cover. However, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light rain are expected over parts of Kogi, Kwara, the Federal Capital Territory and Benue states during the afternoon and evening period.
In the southern region, cloudy conditions are expected in the morning, with possible light rainfall in parts of Delta and Bayelsa states. Thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are also forecast for Ondo, Ogun, Osun and Ekiti states, as well as parts of the South-East and South-South regions later on Friday.
On Saturday, the agency projects sunny and hazy weather across the northern region, while North-Central states are expected to experience sunny skies with occasional cloud patches. Isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall may occur in parts of Kogi, Kwara and Benue states later in the day.
The South is expected to remain cloudy during the morning hours, with widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall anticipated in many areas as the day progresses.
For Sunday, NiMet forecasts slight dust haze over most northern states throughout the day. The North-Central region is expected to experience sunny weather with intermittent cloud cover, while southern states are likely to witness cloudy morning conditions followed by light rainfall and thunderstorms.
Parts of Imo, Abia and Anambra states are expected to record light rain, while sections of the South-West and South-South regions may also experience rainfall later in the day.
NiMet urged residents, particularly those suffering from asthma and other respiratory conditions, to take precautions against suspended dust particles in the atmosphere.
The agency also warned that strong winds could precede thunderstorms and advised the public to secure loose objects, stay away from tall trees and disconnect electrical appliances during storms to reduce the risk of injuries and damage.
In addition, airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet to support effective flight planning and operations.
The agency encouraged Nigerians to stay updated through its official weather information platforms for the latest forecasts and advisories.
