Suspected Lakurawa terrorists have killed a police inspector and 11 civilians during an attack on Wawilaiyi and Kystu villages in Koko/Besse Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The attack, which occurred on Wednesday, also left several houses destroyed and forced many residents to flee their communities.
Confirming the incident on Thursday, the spokesperson for the Kebbi State Police Command, SP Bashir Usman, said the police officer lost his life during a gun battle with the attackers.
According to him, the identity of the slain inspector would not be disclosed until investigations are completed.
“Yes, there was an attack on Wawilaiyi and Kystu villages by suspected Mamudawa terrorists. Unfortunately, they killed one police inspector during an exchange of fire,” Usman said.
The attackers reportedly set homes ablaze and looted food supplies from shops before escaping from the area.
In response, security operatives have taken control of the affected communities and launched efforts to track down those responsible for the assault.
Usman said the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, had cordoned off the affected locations to prevent further attacks and restore normalcy.
He also assured residents that additional security personnel had been deployed to strengthen protection in the area and improve safety for local communities.
The latest attack has heightened concerns over the growing insecurity facing rural settlements in Kebbi State, with residents calling for stronger measures to curb recurring terrorist activities and protect lives and property.
