NAFDAC Disowns Viral ‘Fake Products’ List, Warns Against Sharing Unverified Claims

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has firmly rejected a list circulating widely on social media that labels numerous products available in Nigeria as fake, adulterated or substandard.

In a statement signed by its Resident Media Consultant, Sayo Akintola, the agency made clear that the list did not come from NAFDAC and must not be treated as an official alert, recall notice or safety advisory.

NAFDAC warned that the unverified claims risk creating needless panic among consumers while unfairly harming the reputation and commercial interests of genuine manufacturers, distributors and retailers.

The agency stressed that it never issues broad declarations about product safety or authenticity without following established regulatory steps.

These include investigation, sampling and, where required, laboratory and scientific verification. When a specific product or batch is found to be substandard, falsified, adulterated or unsafe, NAFDAC issues detailed, verifiable information through its official channels only.

“A product cannot responsibly be declared fake or unsafe merely because its name or photograph appears on a social-media list,” the statement emphasised.

NAFDAC urged the public to ignore the viral list completely and stop sharing or amplifying it. It reminded Nigerians of the clear distinction between social-media allegations and official regulatory findings.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health by ensuring regulated products meet required standards of safety, quality and efficacy.

It will continue to take enforcement action whenever investigations confirm the need for intervention.Consumers, healthcare professionals, manufacturers and other stakeholders were advised to rely solely on NAFDAC’s official communication platforms for accurate information on product alerts, recalls, withdrawals or suspensions.

While welcoming public vigilance in reporting suspected counterfeit or substandard goods, NAFDAC noted that such reports serve as useful intelligence but must be properly investigated and scientifically verified before any conclusions are drawn.
