Former Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Sam Amadi, has criticised Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, accusing his administration of suppressing opposition voices and failing to focus on governance despite the resources available to the state.
In a statement on Thursday, Amadi alleged that the governor has shown intolerance towards dissent and is more preoccupied with stifling political critics than addressing the developmental challenges confronting Enugu State. According to him, the administration is underperforming despite enjoying significant goodwill and support.
“You are failing unnecessarily. You are suppressing opposition instead of delivering governance. Enugu people deserve better,” Amadi said.
The former NERC boss argued that Governor Mbah’s government has not provided the purposeful leadership expected by residents, citing concerns over infrastructure, youth unemployment and the prevailing economic difficulties in the state.
He maintained that democracy flourishes when opposition parties and citizens are free to express differing opinions and offer constructive criticism, warning that efforts to silence critics could undermine democratic values. Amadi further alleged that several opposition figures and outspoken residents had faced intimidation and harassment for criticising policies of the current administration.
He urged the governor to concentrate on fulfilling campaign promises made to the people of Enugu rather than targeting perceived political opponents. The political commentator also questioned reports that a proposed National Democratic Coalition (NDC) town hall meeting involving the coalition’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, had been blocked.
According to Amadi, opposition political activities in Enugu have increasingly encountered obstacles, raising concerns about political inclusion in the state. Drawing comparisons with neighbouring states such as Imo, Anambra and Ebonyi, he argued that opposition parties appear to enjoy greater freedom to operate in those states.
While acknowledging Governor Mbah’s right to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Amadi stressed that such political alignment should not come at the expense of political pluralism, democratic participation and the constitutional rights of opposition parties.
He reiterated his call for a more open political environment, insisting that governance should take precedence over political confrontation.
