Former Kano State Governor and leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to thoroughly investigate allegations of artificial intelligence-generated photographs and other suspicious entries in Nigeria’s preliminary voter register.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Kwankwaso expressed concern that any irregularities in the voter register could undermine public trust in the electoral process and threaten the credibility of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, reports suggesting the presence of AI-generated images in the voter register raise serious questions about the integrity of the voter registration process and the safeguards put in place by INEC to prevent manipulation.
“With the 2027 elections approaching, INEC must provide Nigerians with clear and convincing answers,” Kwankwaso stated.
The former presidential candidate questioned how the alleged fake or suspicious photographs found their way into the register and whether the identities of those linked to the images were properly verified during registration.
While welcoming INEC’s decision to investigate the allegations, Kwankwaso stressed that Nigerians deserve more than assurances. He called for a transparent, independent, and comprehensive probe, with the findings made public and those responsible held accountable.
He also urged the electoral commission to conduct an independent audit of the preliminary voter register to uncover questionable entries, duplicate registrations, and any potential artificial identities. Kwankwaso, however, emphasised that efforts to clean up the register should not deprive legitimate voters of their constitutional right to participate in elections.
“Our democracy cannot afford any compromise in the integrity of the voter register. Every eligible Nigerian must have the right to vote, and every vote must count,” he said. The former governor further warned against the misuse of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, to influence or manipulate electoral outcomes.
“Nobody should be allowed to exploit technology, including artificial intelligence, to undermine our electoral system,” he added. Kwankwaso maintained that the success and credibility of the 2027 general elections will depend largely on the accuracy and integrity of the voter register.
“The credibility of the 2027 elections begins with a credible voter register, and INEC must get its act together,” he declared.
