The Kaduna State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has endorsed Governor Uba Sani’s re-election bid, praising him as a “Pensioners-Friendly Governor” who has significantly improved the welfare of retirees in the state.
During a courtesy visit on Tuesday, the union presented an award to the governor, commending his administration for releasing over ₦21 billion to settle outstanding gratuities and death benefits within three years.
State Secretary of the union, Comrade Alhassan Balarabe Musa, noted that history would remember Governor Sani for prompt pension payments, stressing that retirees now receive their entitlements on time, sometimes even before civil servants get their salaries.
“Within three years of your tenure, you were able to pay more than ₦21 billion, which in the history of Kaduna State is unprecedented,” Musa said, adding that the amount represents about 60% of what the previous administration paid in eight years.
Deputy National Chairman of NUP, Comrade Abdullahi Usman Onuh, also rallied support for the governor, urging pensioners to mobilize votes for his second term.
In response, Governor Sani reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to senior citizens, promising to review monthly pension entitlements in line with current realities.
He also pledged to provide the union with a bus and land within Kaduna metropolis.Governor Sani emphasized that a strong civil service and fair treatment of retirees are vital for effective governance, noting that Kaduna’s pension reforms could inspire similar action in other states.
