Israeli President Isaac Herzog has announced that four passengers who helped overpower a violent co-pilot on a Flydubai flight will receive the nation’s Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism.
The incident occurred when the aircraft, bound for Tel Aviv, was diverted to Saudi Arabia after both pilots were found wounded.
Officials said the co-pilot attempted to crash the plane, but passengers intervened after hearing screams about a stabbing.
“You put yourselves at risk to save others and prevented a terrible disaster. Today, the whole world saw the beautiful and courageous face of Israeli society,” Herzog said in a statement, praising the bravery of those involved.
Among the honorees is Yaniv Hayoun, a plumber who broke into the cockpit and pinned down the attacker.
He returned to Israel wearing a bloodstained shirt and was personally welcomed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Ben Gurion Airport.
Another award recipient, Asaf Rajuan, described the ordeal: “We felt helpless, suspended in midair. It was all instinct, to survive, to save the family, the people, and the children.”
Herzog also commended the Indian pilot, Smit Machchha, who managed to open the cockpit door despite being stabbed, enabling passengers and crew to subdue the co-pilot and avert disaster.
