Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said the 2027 general elections will serve as a crucial test of Nigeria’s democratic maturity, urging citizens to uphold peace, unity, and justice as the nation prepares for another electoral season.
Jonathan made the remarks in his Independence Day message on Thursday as Nigeria marked its 66th anniversary.
He called on Nigerians to remain patriotic and committed to national unity, stressing that the resilience of the people has always helped the country overcome challenges since independence.
“In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity. I urge all Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritise actions that safeguard peace, unity, and justice,” he said.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey since 1960, Jonathan noted that despite numerous obstacles, the country has consistently emerged stronger.
He urged citizens to harness Nigeria’s diversity and abundant resources for sustainable development, particularly encouraging young people to remain hopeful and courageous in building a prosperous future.
“The years ahead hold immense possibilities, provided we harness our diversity and our abundant natural and human resources to drive sustainable development,” he said.
Jonathan also emphasised the responsibility of leaders at all levels to demonstrate patriotism, good governance, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law.
He urged Nigerians to remain dedicated to national service, working together to build a peaceful, secure, and equitable nation.
