The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of Arinze Nwogba in Kuje Correctional Centre for allegedly impersonating Professor Segun Aina, Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Justice Salim Ibrahim gave the ruling on Friday, directing that Nwogba remain in custody pending a decision on his bail application, which was argued by his lawyer, Christian Ejike.
The court fixed October 7 for ruling on the bail request and October 19 for the commencement of trial.
Charges FiledThe Inspector-General of Police filed six counts against Nwogba in case number FHC/ABJ/CR/612/2026.
Prosecutors allege that Nwogba fraudulently used the identity of the JAMB Registrar on WhatsApp, Truecaller, and LinkedIn to deceive unsuspecting Nigerians and solicit money under false pretenses.According to the police, Nwogba posed as “Dr. Stephen Igwe,” claiming to have secured contracts approved by the Ministry of Education.
Victims were allegedly asked to pay ₦900,000 and ₦3 million into accounts linked to the scheme.
While Nwogba pleaded not guilty to all charges, his lawyer sought bail on liberal terms.
The prosecution opposed the application, arguing that the defendant might abscond if released. A counter affidavit filed by the police claimed that Nwogba’s supporting documents contained false statements.
Investigation DetailsPolice investigators said the fraudsters used the JAMB Registrar’s image and name to lure victims, promising contracts for laptop supplies.
Nwogba was later arrested in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, and allegedly confessed to forwarding account details for fraudulent use. Authorities noted that one accomplice, identified as Nnabufe Nwekpa, remains at large.
The Inspector-General of Police assured the court that exhibits and witnesses were ready, pledging to prosecute the case expeditiously.
