Amupitan Orders Review of Voter Registration, PVC Delivery in South-East

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has directed a comprehensive review of voter registration documentation in the South-East and ordered the removal of all obstacles hindering the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the 2027 general election.

Speaking in Enugu during the South-East Zonal Interactive Meeting on staff readiness, Amupitan stressed that ensuring every registered voter receives a PVC is the Commission’s top operational priority in the region.

“Our commitment is unwavering: no qualified citizen who has registered shall be excluded from voting due to administrative or logistical challenges,” he declared.

Amupitan revealed that Nigeria’s National Register of Voters has reached about 103 million, with 10.6 million new registrants recorded across three phases of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) between August 2025 and July 2026.

He noted that the figures remain subject to final biometric verification. For the first time, INEC introduced an Online Registration Portal during Phase III to overcome geographical and time constraints.

Additionally, Printable PVC technology was deployed under Section 18(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, aimed at eliminating long delays in card collection.

The Enugu meeting marked the third leg of INEC’s nationwide readiness assessment tour, following similar engagements in Lagos and Kaduna.

Amupitan highlighted the significance of the visit, noting that no INEC Chairman had visited the Enugu office since 1999.

He emphasized that the Commission was breaking away from past practices of remote governance by directly engaging zonal offices to strengthen preparations for the 2027 elections.
