Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has revealed that more than 5,000 school structures were destroyed during the state’s decade-long insurgency, leaving millions of children without access to education.
Speaking in Maiduguri on Sunday at the commissioning of new projects, including roads, schools, and a flyover, Zulum lamented the devastating impact of insurgency on education.
He noted that at its peak, about 2.2 million children were out of school, with fewer than 500,000 enrolled, while many teachers and administrators lost their lives in service.
The governor, however, highlighted significant progress in rebuilding the education sector. Between 2025 and 2026, his administration invested over ₦46 billion in basic and secondary education, completing 136 projects awaiting commissioning.
He also commissioned the Larawaram Community Senior Secondary School, Shehu Sanda Kyarimi I Primary and Junior Secondary School, the Post Office 9-Span Flyover, and a dualised 2.5km road with drainage.
Zulum stressed that rebuilding schools was not just about physical structures but about restoring confidence, expanding access, and securing the future of Borno’s children.
He reported that usable classrooms had risen to 5,792, WASH facilities to 4,563, and functional senior secondary schools had grown from 34 in 2019 to 129 across 25 LGAs by 2026.
Enrolment figures, he added, had surged from 766,551 learners in 2019 to 1,801,295 in 2026—an increase of over one million students in seven years.
“These indicators demonstrate the scale of our efforts to expand educational access, restore infrastructure and improve the learning environment for our children,” Zulum said.
