The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of engaging in what he described as one of Nigeria’s most cynical economic deceptions.
In a statement released by his aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku criticized the government for removing fuel subsidy, an action that has worsened hardship for millions of families, while failing to meet the financial demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
He argued that the government’s promise to channel subsidy savings into education has proven false, as lecturers continue to complain about unpaid salaries and unresolved agreements.
“A government that takes away relief from citizens, does not offer real social support, and doesn’t fulfil the basic promises it made has lost the right to talk about asking people to sacrifice,” Atiku said.
Highlighting the rising cost of food, transport, and energy, Atiku noted that Nigerians have been left to bear the brunt of economic reforms without visible improvements in schools, hospitals, or everyday living conditions.
He stressed that the looming ASUU strike underscores the government’s failure to prioritize education, adding:
“The Government removed the cushion, collected the supposed savings and imposed the hardship, but Nigerians cannot see the corresponding improvement in their schools, hospitals or everyday lives.”
Atiku concluded that the crisis in Nigeria’s universities, marked by poor infrastructure and limited admission spaces raises urgent questions about how subsidy savings have been spent.
