The African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s prolonged absence from Nigeria, questioning why the President remains in France beyond his officially declared three-week vacation.
In a statement released through his media aide, Atiku noted that Tinubu has now been away for 28 days, exceeding the constitutional 21-day limit outlined in Section 145(2) of Nigeria’s Constitution.
The provision requires the President to transmit authority to the Vice-President if absent beyond that period, failing which the National Assembly can mandate the Vice-President to act.
Atiku argued that while French President Emmanuel Macron has attended international engagements and returned home, Nigeria’s President continues to stay abroad despite mounting domestic challenges, including insecurity, economic hardship, and rising living costs.
He asked: “The obvious question is: what exactly is keeping the President of Nigeria in Paris? If a letter was transmitted to the National Assembly, let it be published. If not, Nigerians deserve to know why the constitutional procedure has not been followed.”
Atiku recalled that former President Muhammadu Buhari formally handed over power to Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on multiple occasions, urging Tinubu to respect constitutional processes and avoid fueling speculation that his inner circle is reluctant to empower Vice-President Kashim Shettima.
