All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Joe Igbokwe, has criticized religious leaders in the South-East, accusing them of turning a blind eye to the region’s worsening security situation.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, Igbokwe alleged that “all men of God in the South-East are pretending,” claiming they have failed to acknowledge what he described as years of killings in the zone.
He wrote: “Today is Sunday, the day of the Lord. Let me tell us that all men of God in the SE are pretending as if they do not know what happened in the zone in 15 years. They are aware of the thousands killed but kept quiet. If gold rusts, what will iron do?”
Igbokwe’s remarks appeared to reference the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its security wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), which have been linked to violent attacks and destruction of property in the region.
Security operatives continue to battle the group’s armed elements.His comments add to ongoing debates about the role of religious leaders in addressing insecurity and social unrest in the South-East.
