Heavy rainfall in Achusa Community, Makurdi, Benue State, has submerged several houses, displacing residents and causing widespread destruction.
Victims described the flood as one of the worst in recent years, forcing families to abandon their homes, destroying property worth millions of naira, and leaving many to seek refuge on higher ground or with relatives.
Governor Hyacinth Alia visited the affected area and dispatched a delegation led by Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Chief Solomon Iorpev, alongside other officials, to assess the damage and propose solutions.
Preliminary findings revealed that many of the submerged houses were built illegally on waterways and flood plains, obstructing the natural flow of water.
The government announced plans to demolish such structures to open drainage channels, while promising compensation for landlords with approved properties.
Commissioner for Works, Kuma Iyenge, explained that ongoing road and drainage construction from the Hotel Lucia axis through Achusa would help reduce flooding once completed.
Community leaders, however, appealed for compensation to cover all affected landlords, stressing that residents have endured years of flooding due to poor drainage and unchecked development.
As water levels slowly recede, displaced families continue to count their losses, while the government urges residents to avoid building on waterways and pledges long-term solutions to the recurring flood crisis.
