Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on Nigerian leaders to focus on building strong institutions and policies that will continue to serve citizens long after their tenure in office.
Speaking through his Special Adviser on Special Duties, Aliyu Modibbo, at the launch of a book on the life and legacy of Brigadier Musa Usman, the pioneer military governor of the former North-Eastern State, Shettima stressed that true leadership is measured by the structures and improvements that endure beyond political cycles.
“We must build beyond the next elections and think beyond political boundaries. Leadership is measured by what continues to serve the people after the leader has left office,” he said.
Shettima praised the authors, Mahmud Jega and Theophilus Aba, for documenting Usman’s contributions, noting that his legacy remains visible across the North-East, particularly in Maiduguri where the Musa Usman Secretariat stands as a lasting monument.
Former National Security Adviser Babagana Monguno highlighted Usman’s foresight, citing projects such as the Ashaka Cement Company, Savannah Sugar Factory, and the Chad Basin Development Authority as evidence of his commitment to transforming the region.
He warned that neglecting such initiatives had left the Lake Chad Basin vulnerable to insecurity.
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babagana Kingibe, described Usman’s leadership style as collegiate, combining humility with vision.
He noted that despite assuming office at just 27, Usman worked closely with experienced civil servants to deliver development projects across the vast and diverse North-Eastern State.
The event underscored the importance of drawing lessons from past leaders who treated public office as a duty to strengthen institutions and serve the people, rather than as a stepping stone to political gain.
