The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) says it has conducted targeted passport intervention exercises in the United States, Canada and Qatar, with a similar exercise ongoing in the United Kingdom.
Akinsola Akinlabi, NIS public relations officer, said in a
statement that the total number of Nigerians enrolled across the four countries
stands at 8,552.
The statement noted that the exercises followed the
directive of Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, minister of interior, as part of efforts to
improve passport service delivery to Nigerians in the diaspora.
The NIS added that the exercises “aimed to bring passport
services closer to Nigerians across various cities, and were conducted in
collaboration with Nigerian diplomatic missions and representatives of Nigerian
communities in the aforementioned countries, to ensure a coordinated and
responsive Service Delivery process”.
The NIS said thousands of Nigerians have benefited from the
exercises across the four countries.
In the US, the statement said 535 Nigerians were enrolled in
Chicago, Michigan and Milwaukee between September 7 and 15.
In Canada, 2,257 Nigerians were enrolled in Manitoba,
Toronto, Saskatoon, Alberta and New Brunswick between September 6 and 19.
The service said 751 Nigerians were enrolled in Qatar
between August 9 and 24.
In the UK, where the exercise is ongoing in London and
Manchester, 5,099 Nigerians have so far been enrolled.
“The intervention exercise in the United Kingdom is still
ongoing, with passport production and dispatch being carried out concurrently,”
the statement reads.
“Accordingly, applicants who were unable to secure
appointment slots during the exercise, as well as those who may prefer not to
physically visit the centres or the High Commission, are encouraged to utilise
the Contactless Passport Application System.”
