The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has clarified why Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
Idris explained on Monday that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently on annual leave and has mandated Shettima to represent him fully at the high-level gathering.
“President Tinubu is on annual leave, and his decision to ask the Vice President to lead Nigeria’s delegation is neither unusual nor a diminution of the country’s diplomatic standing,” Idris said in a statement.
Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement and participate in bilateral meetings and high-level sessions focused on peace and security, economic development, climate action, reform of the global financial system, and sustainable development.
The minister dismissed concerns that Tinubu’s absence might weaken Nigeria’s presence at the Assembly, stressing that Shettima carries the President’s full mandate.
Tinubu had earlier departed Abuja on August 30 for a three-week vacation in Europe, sparking speculation about his attendance at the UNGA.
The Presidency later confirmed that Shettima would represent him.The 81st UNGA General Debate runs from September 22 to 28, 2026, under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
