Nigeria Secures New Chinese Funding to Boost Power Supply

The Federal Government has secured fresh investment commitments from Chinese firms to tackle Nigeria’s persistent power challenges, according to the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe.

In a statement issued on Thursday by his spokesperson, Adeola Labzy, Tegbe announced the breakthrough after completing high-level talks in Beijing with leading Chinese power engineering companies and financial institutions.

The engagements form part of an ongoing Nigeria–China power sector mission. The new commitments are expected to speed up delivery of projects under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI).

Officials framed the discussions around a clear benchmark: converting partnerships into bankable, fully financed projects that deliver measurable results more megawatts generated, kilometres of transmission lines energised, and longer hours of reliable electricity for Nigerians.

During the meetings, the minister pushed for stricter and faster completion timelines on all ongoing PPI projects.

He also urged a move away from traditional engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts toward broader, full-scope partnerships that deepen Chinese involvement in Nigeria’s power sector.

Despite previous efforts, most Nigerians still lack reliable electricity. Data from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission confirms that the majority of the population continues to live without consistent power supply.
