The Federal Government has strongly denied allegations circulating on social media that Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) supported the recent failed coup attempt in Niger Republic.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaiye, described the claims as baseless and irresponsible, warning that they were deliberate attempts to misinform the public and damage Nigeria’s reputation.
In a statement issued Thursday, Enikanolaiye stressed that Nigeria has never supported, and will never support, military coups or unconstitutional changes of government.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to democracy, constitutional order, and regional stability across West Africa and the Sahel.
“Nigeria will never support illegality or unconstitutional change of government anywhere, no matter who is involved or which country is concerned,” he said, urging citizens to disregard misleading videos and narratives online.
The minister emphasized Nigeria’s longstanding fraternal ties with Niger and reiterated the government’s call for a peaceful and inclusive return to constitutional order.
He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s adherence to the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance and the African Union’s zero-tolerance stance on coups.
Enikanolaiye concluded that Nigeria would continue working with ECOWAS, the African Union, and the international community to defend democracy, uphold the rule of law, and promote peace and security in the region.
