How I Made 10M Monthly From Akara Businness - Gov. Ume Eno

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has disclosed that before venturing into politics, he made not less than ₦10 million monthly from his akara and bread business.

Speaking during the state’s monthly covenant prayer service on Tuesday, Eno recounted how he began by selling akara and bread, packaged as “Akara Burger,” before expanding into a coffee shop. He noted that workers heading to ExxonMobil were among his regular customers.

“We still have that shop there. I started selling Akara and bread. Back then, I was doing Akara Burger. Every month, that Akara business used to give me nothing less than ₦10 million,” he said.

The governor explained that the experience taught him valuable lessons about entrepreneurship and the importance of starting small.

His revelation comes months after First Lady Oluremi Tinubu encouraged Nigerians to explore small-scale businesses such as akara and kuli-kuli to improve their livelihoods. While her comments drew criticism, she later clarified that the initiative also supported petty traders across various sectors, announcing a ₦100 million intervention for 2,000 traders in Jigawa State.

President Bola Tinubu even joined the conversation, jokingly referring to his wife as “Iya Alakara” during a press dinner.

Eno’s account has now reignited discussions on the potential of small-scale enterprises as a pathway to sustainable income and economic empowerment in Nigeria.
