Armed bandits struck Girkau village in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State in the early hours of Thursday, September 10, 2026, leaving one resident dead and abducting an official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The kidnapped staff member has been identified as Bala Aladan, who serves in Tambuwal Local Government Area.Confirming the incident, the Sokoto State Police Command said it has launched an investigation and deployed additional personnel to the area.
DSP Ahmed Rufai, the command’s spokesperson, explained that the attackers stormed the community after residents had already been evacuated.
“One resident was killed, while an INEC employee was abducted during the attack. Security agencies are on the ground, and as of this morning, no further report has been received,” Rufai stated.
Local sources, however, reported that the assailants fired sporadically before abducting an unspecified number of residents. A police source disclosed that search-and-rescue operations are ongoing, with efforts focused on tracking the fleeing attackers.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could aid the investigation.
