The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned it may resume its suspended nationwide strike if the Federal Government and state governments fail to urgently address unresolved issues affecting lecturers.
In a statement issued by ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, after an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the University of Abuja, the union said it could reactivate the strike “without any further notice” over the incomplete implementation of the December 2025 agreement, non-payment of 3.5 months of withheld salaries, and failure to remit billions of naira in deductions from lecturers’ wages.
ASUU commended states such as Abia, Bauchi, Ekiti, Ogun, Benue, Yobe, Adamawa, Kebbi, Katsina, and Borno for beginning implementation of the agreement, while noting that Kano, Edo, Plateau, Taraba, Gombe, and Bayelsa had pledged to start in September or October.
It warned other states to act swiftly to avoid “an industrial crisis of monumental proportions.”
On withheld salaries, the union acknowledged that President Bola Tinubu’s administration had paid four of the 7.5 months owed from the Buhari era but insisted the outstanding 3.5 months must be released immediately.
ASUU also alleged that pension contributions, cooperative deductions, and union check-off dues running into billions of naira had not been remitted for months, threatening industrial peace in universities.“
In no mistaken terms, ASUU posits that the non- or haphazard implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement by federal and state governments is a recipe for industrial crisis in Nigeria’s public universities,” the statement read.
The union urged governments to act quickly, stressing it would not accept responsibility if the suspended strike is reactivated.
