Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Benue State, Chief Michael Aondoakaa, has declared that the 2027 election will give voters the chance to decide whether Governor Hyacinth Alia deserves a second term.
Speaking to journalists in Makurdi on Monday, Aondoakaa dismissed claims that incumbent governors in Benue cannot be defeated, stressing that serving two terms is not an automatic right.
“The law does not give a governor eight years. It gives a governor four years. The other four years are what the people give you,” he said.
He argued that the Constitution only guarantees an initial four-year tenure, while a second term depends entirely on the electorate’s decision.
The PDP candidate expressed confidence that Governor Alia could be unseated, citing poor accessibility to the people, worsening insecurity, and uneven distribution of development as weaknesses of the current administration.
Aondoakaa emphasized that past governors who secured re-election did so by remaining close to citizens, adding that leaders must make themselves available and responsive to the needs of constituents.
He concluded that the 2027 governorship race would ultimately be determined by the people of Benue, urging voters to carefully assess the incumbent’s performance before deciding whether to renew his mandate.
