Shettima Resumes Duties Two Days Ahead of Schedule

Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned from his two-week leave earlier than expected, resuming official duties on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, two days before his scheduled return date of August 20.

Officials confirmed his arrival in Abuja late Tuesday, noting that he had already resumed work.

However, Shettima was absent from Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the State House.

His early resumption coincides with the commencement of campaigns for the 2027 elections, which the Independent National Electoral Commission announced would begin on August 19.

Shettima had proceeded on his first official leave since assuming office on May 29, 2023, with Tinubu’s approval.

His aide, Stanley Nkwocha, explained at the time that the Vice President would use the period for “study, reflection, and intellectual renewal,” reviewing government programmes and deepening his understanding of national and global policy issues.

Since taking office, Shettima has overseen several strategic initiatives in economic development, food security, humanitarian affairs, digital transformation, job creation, and regional cooperation.

He also chairs the National Economic Council, which includes all 36 state governors, the Central Bank Governor, and other key officials.

His early return signals readiness to re-engage with pressing national matters as the administration intensifies implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
