The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has expressed readiness to embrace the creation of state police if approved, pledging to uphold professionalism, accountability, and operational excellence under the new framework.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, gave the assurance while opening a one-day sensitisation workshop on state police organised by the Nigeria Institute of Police Studies (NIPS).
He explained that the workshop was designed to equip officers with the knowledge and capacity to engage constructively in discussions on state policing and adapt to future reforms.
Egbetokun urged participants to share the insights gained with colleagues across commands to ensure a unified understanding of the proposed changes.
Professor Olu Ogunshakin, Director-General of NIPS, commended the IGP for establishing the Police Steering Committee on State Police, noting that several of its recommendations have been integrated into the proposed State Police Bill.
He described the development as a major milestone in Nigeria’s policing reform agenda.
The sensitisation workshop forms part of broader efforts by the NPF to prepare personnel for emerging reforms, strengthen operational efficiency, and sustain public confidence in policing.
