The Nigeria Police Force has prohibited political figures and VIPs from taking armed escorts, security aides, or other unauthorised persons to polling units and collation centres during Saturday’s Osun State governorship election.
Force spokesperson, CSP Ani Iniedu, announced the directive in a statement on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, stressing that the measure is part of security arrangements ordered by Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to guarantee a peaceful and credible poll.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police, DIG Ishyaku Mohammed, has been deployed to Osun to coordinate security operations, working alongside other agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).
He will be supported by Assistant Inspectors-General and Commissioners of Police across the state’s three senatorial districts to strengthen intelligence-led policing and ensure swift response to threats.
The Force assured voters, INEC officials, election observers, and media practitioners of adequate protection before, during, and after the election.
It warned that ballot snatching, voter intimidation, political thuggery, and other electoral offences would attract immediate arrest and prosecution.
The police also reiterated that state security outfits, quasi-security groups, and private security organisations are barred from election duties, reaffirming its commitment to neutrality, professionalism, and respect for human rights.
Eligible voters were urged to exercise their franchise peacefully, with assurances of safety throughout the election period.
