The Federal Government has announced that 300 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members will be trained and deployed to compressed natural gas (CNG) conversion centres nationwide.
Dr. Titilope Gbadamosi, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Youth Initiatives, Monitoring and Delivery, revealed this during the launch of the CNG Retrofitting Training Programme at the NYSC FCT Orientation Camp in Kubwa, Abuja.
She explained that the initiative, which will run across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, aims to retrofit 100,000 vehicles annually as part of the country’s transition to affordable and sustainable energy.
“Following the removal of fuel subsidy in 2033, compressed natural gas emerged as the most viable alternative for motorists. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu set a national target of 100,000 vehicles to be retrofitted annually,” Gbadamosi said.
The National Automotive and Development Council (NADD) has pledged full technical and financial support, ensuring certification standards are met.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, noted that the programme would expand job and entrepreneurship opportunities for corps members beyond their service year.
He urged participants to embrace sustainable energy solutions and use their skills to complement academic qualifications.NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, highlighted that the scheme has trained over three million corps members in various skills since 2012.
He described the CNG initiative as a bridge between classroom learning and real-world application, aligning with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“The NYSC is ready to support Nigeria’s energy transition. Together, we can build a robust, innovation-driven economy powered by the ingenuity of our youth,” Nafiu said.
