Kano Chief Judge Orders Release of Seven Inmates on Medical Grounds

The Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Abdu Aboki, has ordered the immediate release of seven inmates on medical grounds after reviewing the cases of 82 awaiting-trial persons.

The exercise, conducted at the Kurmawa and Goron Dutse Custodial Centres, was part of ongoing efforts to promote speedy dispensation of justice and safeguard the rights of persons in custody.

According to a statement by Musbahu Nassarawa, Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service (Kano Command), the Chief Judge considered the health conditions and circumstances surrounding the detainees before granting their freedom.

“The exercise underscores the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, protecting human rights, and ensuring that persons in custody are not detained beyond what is permitted by law,” the statement read.

In her address, Justice Aboki emphasized the importance of administering justice fairly and without delay.

The Controller of Corrections, Ahmed Lakpene, urged the released inmates to embrace their freedom responsibly, remain law-abiding, and avoid actions that could return them to custody.

He also commended the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, for fostering humane treatment of inmates.

The exercise, attended by key judicial and law enforcement stakeholders, forms part of broader efforts to decongest custodial centres and ensure justice remains accessible to all.
