Court Bars Imo Govt, Police from Disrupting Ugochinyere’s Rallies

The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has issued an interim injunction restraining the Imo State Government, security agencies, and local government chairmen in Ideato North and South from interfering with the civic and political activities of Imo Ugochinyere, the lawmaker representing Ideato North/South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Justice Kayode Agunloye granted the order on July 20, 2026, following an ex parte application filed by Ugochinyere.

The suit, marked FCT/HC/CV/153/2026, sought protection against alleged attempts to obstruct his rallies, meetings, and billboards.

The court specifically restrained the defendants and their agents from:Destroying or removing billboards and signages installed by the lawmaker.

Blocking access to venues for peaceful rallies, campaigns, and civic activities.Frustrating political gatherings within Ideato Federal Constituency or elsewhere in Imo State.

Justice Agunloye emphasized that the order was necessary to protect Ugochinyere’s constitutional rights to expression, peaceful assembly, and movement pending the determination of the substantive suit.

The injunction also nullified a June 15, 2026 letter that sought to limit Ugochinyere’s billboards to six, barring officials from enforcing or implementing such restrictions.

The matter has been adjourned to November 4, 2026, with the interim order extended to remain in force until then.

The ruling underscores the judiciary’s role in safeguarding democratic freedoms and ensuring that political activities are conducted without undue interference.
