Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has criticized Maryam Wadada, wife of Nasarawa State APC governorship candidate Senator Ahmed Wadada, after a viral video showed her distributing cash to supporters during an empowerment programme.
Reacting via her official X handle, Yesufu condemned the practice, arguing that such handouts undermine accountability in governance. In the video, Maryam Wadada was reportedly seen sharing money to attendees.
Yesufu compared the cash gifts to the financial burdens ordinary citizens face, such as school fees, rent, and hospital bills.
She wrote:“You see this money the people there are receiving? They value it more than the hundreds of thousands you use to pay their children’s school fees, pay their rents and hospital bills. Do you know that you are the ones subsidising governance for APC to do this freely without the people going after them?”
Her remarks have sparked debate online, with many questioning the ethics of cash distribution in political programmes and its impact on democratic accountability.
