The International Press Centre (IPC) has introduced a WhatsApp-enabled artificial intelligence system to monitor and document attacks against journalists during the upcoming Osun State governorship election.
IPC’s Executive Director, Lanre Arogundade, announced the initiative called WAFLO, at a press conference in Osogbo on Friday.
The pilot deployment will take place during the election scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026.
According to Arogundade, WAFLO is designed to enable real-time reporting, verification, and documentation of incidents affecting press freedom.
It will cover cases such as assault, threats, and other infringements on journalists’ rights while performing their professional duties.
“The fundamental goal of WAFLO is to ensure that incidents affecting journalists do not go unnoticed or unreported,” Arogundade stated.
The platform allows journalists to report safety concerns instantly, giving stakeholders the information needed to respond promptly to threats.
IPC plans to expand WAFLO for full deployment during the 2027 general elections.
The initiative is part of Component 4: Support to Media under the EU-SDGNII Programme, implemented by IPC and the Centre for Media and Society (CEMESO), in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
Journalists can access WAFLO through the SafeMedia WhatsApp prompt or by texting “safemedia” to 0805 877 8053.
IPC also urged reporters to remain properly accredited and carry identification to avoid unnecessary questioning by security personnel.
Arogundade further called on security agencies, political actors, and election stakeholders to respect journalists’ constitutional responsibilities and avoid intimidation or harassment.
The Osun NUJ leadership has expressed support for the technology-driven approach, reinforcing efforts to protect journalists during elections.
