Seventeen suspected bandits, 10 police officers, and two civilians were killed on Monday during a violent confrontation between security forces and a large group of armed men moving from Zamfara State into Kebbi State.
The clash occurred around the Rafin Makuku area of Sakaba Local Government Area. According to residents, about 240 bandits on more than 200 motorcycles had travelled from the Sangeko Gap in Dansadau District, Zamfara, and camped overnight in a forest near Makuku before advancing towards Maburya.
Witnesses said the attackers encountered a mobile police checkpoint and overpowered the officers, killing 10 policemen and two civilians while seizing rifles.
Kebbi State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Bashir Usman, confirmed the incident, stating that 17 suspected bandits were neutralised and four of their motorcycles destroyed. He added that casualty figures were still being verified.
“Tragically, we lost 10 gallant police personnel in the engagement, while two others sustained injuries and are receiving medical attention. Two civilians also lost their lives during the encounter,” Usman said, praising the officers’ courage and professionalism.
The police command pledged continued operations to track down fleeing suspects while supporting the families of the fallen officers and treating the injured.
