VIDEO: Bandit Attacks Spark Protest in Sokoto as Angry Residents Block Major Highway

Residents of Sokoto State took to the streets in a wave of anger and frustration on Friday, blocking a major highway in protest against a surge in deadly bandit attacks that have left communities reeling with fear, displacement, and loss of lives.

Eyewitnesses and videos circulating on social media showed hundreds of protesters, including men, women, and youths, occupying key sections of the highway, bringing vehicular movement to a halt. Demonstrators chanted slogans demanding immediate government intervention, better security, and an end to the relentless assaults by armed bandit groups operating in the region.

The protests were reportedly triggered by recent bandit incursions in parts of the state, including attacks that killed several people, injured others, and forced many families to flee their homes. Similar incidents in recent months have led to deserted communities and widespread displacement in areas like Tureta and surrounding local government areas.

One resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to safety concerns, said: “We are tired of living in fear. Our farms are abandoned, our people are being killed and kidnapped daily, and nothing seems to be done. If the government cannot protect us, we will continue to make our voices heard.”

Local authorities have acknowledged the security challenges, with some officials confirming ongoing operations by security forces to tackle the bandits. However, protesters insist that more decisive action is needed to restore peace and allow residents to return to their normal lives. The blockade caused significant disruption to traffic, affecting commuters traveling to and from Sokoto and neighboring states. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes where possible while tensions remain high.

This latest protest adds to a growing list of demonstrations across northwest Nigeria, where communities have repeatedly expressed outrage over banditry, kidnappings, and inadequate security responses.

Security analysts note that addressing the root causes, including poverty, weak governance in rural areas, and the proliferation of arms remains critical to resolving the crisis. Residents are calling on both state and federal governments to deploy more resources and intelligence-driven operations to curb the violence.

Videos from the scene captured the intensity of the demonstration, with protesters vowing not to relent until tangible improvements in security are seen on the ground.
