The Federal Government has officially launched the nationwide rollout of the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, an ambitious initiative that will assign a unique digital postcode to every home across Nigeria.
Dada Olusegun, Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, made the announcement on Friday, confirming that the process has already begun.“Every home in Nigeria will get a unique digital postcode as part of the ongoing National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System rollout,” Olusegun stated.
“This process has already commenced.”According to the presidency, the new system is designed to create a smarter, more secure, and digitally enabled addressing framework. Officials say it will significantly improve service delivery, enhance emergency response capabilities, boost logistics and e-commerce efficiency, and open up new economic opportunities.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Tinubu administration to modernize Nigeria’s infrastructure and digital economy. “The administration of President Tinubu is committed to reforming every aspect of our economy in order to achieve the ambitious goal of creating a $1trn economy by 2030,” Olusegun added.
The alphanumeric postcode system is expected to replace or complement the existing traditional address formats, which are often inconsistent, especially in rural and semi-urban areas. By providing precise, standardized digital addresses, the government aims to streamline mail delivery, navigation, property registration, utility services, and disaster management.
This development builds on earlier plans by the Federal Government to introduce a digital postcode system, with initial announcements dating back to 2023. The current nationwide rollout signals that implementation is now in full swing.
Stakeholders in the logistics, fintech, and real estate sectors have welcomed the move, noting that accurate addressing remains a major challenge in Nigeria’s digital transformation journey.Further details on how residents can obtain their postcodes, the rollout timeline across states, and the technology platform supporting the system are expected to be released in the coming weeks by relevant government agencies.
