Veterans Demand Immediate Implementation of ₦250,000 Minimum Wage for Soldiers

Retired military officers have called on the Federal Government to urgently implement the approved ₦250,000 minimum wage for serving soldiers, accusing authorities of delaying the execution of a law passed by the National Assembly and signed by President Bola Tinubu.

The demand was made on Monday during a retreat attended by over 70 veterans at the Armed Forces Headquarters Command Mess 1 in Abuja.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, was represented by five senior officers as he was attending a meeting at the Presidential Villa.

Col. Innocent Azubike (retd.), one of the organisers, said the veterans presented documentary evidence supporting their position.

The military representatives reportedly acknowledged the facts and promised to brief the CDS immediately.

“We felt pleased that they acknowledged the facts we raised and felt we could give about a week to know the response from the CDS,” Azubike stated.

The veterans expressed disappointment over the delay, noting that the National Assembly passed the bill in October 2025 after a comparative study revealed Nigeria had one of the lowest military pay scales in Africa.

President Tinubu assented to the bill in November 2025, with provisions for three months’ arrears.

Azubike criticised recent claims by military authorities, including the Minister of Defence, suggesting the minimum wage had only been increased to ₦100,000 under the 2024 national minimum wage adjustment.

He clarified that this was separate from the specific military salary review approved late last year.

The retired officers warned that they remain committed to a planned peaceful protest at the Federal Ministry of Finance if the approved salary structure is not implemented promptly.
